What makes enhanced geothermal different

Traditional geothermal depends on rare natural conditions where heat, water, and permeability already exist together. Enhanced geothermal systems take a different approach.

Fractures are created in deep, hot, impermeable rock to allow injected water to flow where it otherwise wouldn’t and brings usable heat back to the surface.

This expands where geothermal energy can be developed and creates a pathway for reliable energy in more regions.

How it works

Enhanced geothermal systems use drilling and hydraulic fracturing to move water through hot, dry rock deep below the surface. The system is designed to capture underground heat and bring it back to the surface, where it can be used to generate electricity or provide direct heat.
